AGA members advocate
their legislators support Commission on Digestive Diseases and increased
funding for NIH.
The
AGA held a well-timed advocacy day on Capitol Hill in October, bringing
21 AGA members to speak with their legislators and ask them to support
the AGA’s National Commission on Digestive Diseases and increased
funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Through the AGA’s
efforts, and with the help of our congressional champions, language
establishing a National Commission on Digestive Diseases was included in
both the House and Senate Labor, HHS and Education Appropriations bills.
The House bill passed, with
a 2.8 percent increase for NIH and a 3 percent increase for National
Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The
Senate Appropriations Committee passed their version of the bill, which
included a 4 percent increase for both NIH and NIDDK. At press time, the
Senate bill had yet to go before the full Senate. — Mike Roberts
