December 5 - 14, 2005 Lucia Day is always on 13 December. Originally it was a festival of St. Lucia, from Syracuse in Italy, but in Sweden, the main point of Lucia Day is to light up one of the darkest days of the year. Lucia and her cohort usually come early in the morning, before dawn. She brings light in the darkness. Dressed in a long white shift with a red silk band around her waist and a crown of candles perched on her head, she walks into the dark rooms followed by white-clad handmaidens and "star-boys". At the end of the procession are gingerbread men and brownies with lanterns. Together, the members of the procession form a choir, singing special Lucia songs.
